The following obituary is a courtesy post for the family of George L. Barbee.
George Lovett Barbee of Savannah and Sycamore, Ga, passed away on May 28, 2025, after health complications from Agent Orange exposure while serving 2 tours in the Vietnam War. His passing has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and many more whose lives were touched by him.
George was born on August 5, 1948, to L.M. and Georgiana Barbee. George married Susan Hickman Barbee of Ashburn, Ga, in 1969 and had two daughters, Tanya and Brittany.
George graduated from Turner County High School in 1966, attended vocational school, and then enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he completed his college education with a Bachelor of Business Administration and Finance degree from Troy University. Serving honorably in the military for 22 years, earning the rank of Major. After retirement, he had a business, Barbee Home Management, for 8 years, then retired again to enjoy spending time with his family, restoring vintage cars, woodworking, and riding his motorcycle.
George was predeceased by his parents, L.M. and Georgiana Barbee, brothers Mark Barbee of Beech Mountain, N.C., and Paul Barbee of Ocala, FL. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Susan Barbee of Norcross, Ga. and his daughters Tanya Barbee Smith of Richmond Hill, Ga. and Brittany Barbee of Roswell, Ga, Granddaughters Lauren and Madison Smith, Brother-Douglas Barbee of Ashburn, Ga, 2 sisters Kathy Barbee of Paso Robles, CA and Linda Barbee of Taylors, S.C., Keith Smith, son-in-law and Jeff Springfield, son-in-law to be.
Celebration of life service to honor the life of George L. Barbee will be held on Monday, June 16, 2025, at 10:30 am at First Baptist Atlanta, 4400 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, Georgia 30338.Military honors will be rendered at the graveside following the celebration of Life and reception at Georgia National Cemetery, 2025 Mount Carmel Church Lane, Canton, Georgia 30114, at 2:30 pm.
