Barry Eugene Matthews, 67, of Ashburn passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at Tift Regional Medical Center with his family by his side.

Barry was born on September 9, 1954, to the late Ross Matthews, Jr. and Geraldine Sharp Matthews Roberts. He retired from the United States Army where he served his country proudly. He later worked as a civilian service member and retired from the United States Navy. He was very proud of his country and was honored to have retired from both the Army and Navy. Barry was of the baptist faith for many years and could quote many scriptures. He loved sports and particularly enjoyed playing golf, bowling, and racketball. Barry had a very competitive spirit while playing golf with his stepsons and best friends. He loved life and lived it to the fullest with his family. Barry was an amazing son, brother, uncle, and husband.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Matthews of Ashburn; stepfather, Gary Roberts of Ashburn; daughter, Teresa Stanfield of Glennville, GA; stepchildren, Freddie Ansley, Bill (Leah) Ansley III, and Stephen (Chelsey) Ansley; brothers, Roy Alfred (Alma) Matthews of Middleburg, FL and Ted Roberts of Ashburn; sister, Gail Dee Maddox of Dublin, GA; and grandchildren, Carmen Bigalow, Kara Grey, Crystal Gilliam, and Amber Howe. He is also survived by many great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Barry was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Ann Matthews and a brother, Ricky Matthews.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00AM Sunday, June 5, 2022, at Perry Funeral Chapel in Ashburn with visitation one hour prior to the time of the service. Interment will be held at 3:00 PM that afternoon at Hutcheson Cemetery in Soperton.
