Susan Barfield Hobby

d. February 17, 2022

Beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Susan Barfield Hobby, age 84, died on February 17, 2022 in Savannah, Georgia after an extended illness.

She was born on October 22, 1937 on the family farm in the Dakota area of Turner County Georgia, near the small town of Ashburn. Her parents were Beatrice Annette Nipper Barfield and Benjamin Franklin Barfield.

As a child, she attended the Dakota school in Turner County and then graduated from Ashburn High School in 1955. In high school she was on the cheerleading squad and a member of the Glee Club. She excelled in and enjoyed grammar and spelling.

In her high school years, she met the love of her life, Joseph Elmer Hobby, at a soda fountain in Ashburn, Georgia. After high school, they both relocated to Orlando, Florida, where they attended the First Baptist Church. They were married there in 1958.

Susan attended secretarial school in Orlando, Florida and worked for Southern Bell Telephone for several years. She never forgot her Gregg Shorthand skills.

Susan and her husband lived and raised their children in Orlando, Florida from 1957 to 1988. The family attended Walnut Street Baptist Church and Dover Shores Baptist Church. Susan had many friends in the community and at church. She loved participating in the church choir and volunteering at church and her children’s schools. The family relocated to Savannah in 1988, where they attended Windsor Forest Baptist Church and Susan joined the choir, while also sharing her energy and enthusiasm for life through volunteering at the church.

Susan was the most loving sister, aunt, wife, mother, and grandmother. She was generous with her hugs, kisses, smiles, and encouragement. She was a good friend and a thoughtful neighbor. She found joy in nature, music, pets, and the company of her loved ones. She always enjoyed a walk outside in nice weather, a good game of Scrabble, or a sing-a-long. She also loved to ride her bike.

She was preceded in death by her parents, as well as by four of her six siblings: Benjamin Franklin “Frank” Barfield Jr. of Macon, Richard Edward Barfield of Ashburn, Frances Barfield Hilliard of Rhine, and Lanier Taylor “LT” Barfield of Albany.
